2010 HEAD RED Shiraz Viognier – Barossa Valley. HEAD RED is a barrel cull from Barossan vineyards including ‘The Blonde’ & ‘The Brunette’ single vineyard wines. It allows a pre-view of the vintage quality to come and keeps the quality of ‘The Blonde’ and ‘The Brunette’ wines as high as possible. The wine always receives 12 months barrel age in predominantly older French Hogsheads allowing the vintage and terroir to show clearly. A larger portion of ‘The Brunette’ Syrah went into this year’s wine – showing through in its robust structure and palate weight. Lovers of the 2008 HEAD RED will enjoy this wine for its cellar-worthiness and same bang for your buck! Deep crimson-purple. The nose shows raspberry, mulberry, musk and ripe black plums. The palate has big upfront fruit on entry with sweet, fruit derived tannins and licorice in the middle. Fresh dark cherries, damson plums and soft ovaltiney tannins help finish the wine. Drink for 8 years. 14% Alc.
This is a result of a ‘barrel cull’ from The Blonde and The Brunette Single Vineyard sites. The highly aromatic bouquet opens the curtains for a virtuoso display of juicy red and black cherry/berry fruits, the finish exceptionally long thanks in part to the quality of the oak and of the tannins. 94 PtsJames Halliday
